Tang Soo Do

Karate/Tang Soo Do is the Martial Art which incorporates kicking, punching, elbow strikes, knee strikes, joint locks, throws, and sweeps.

Literally translated, it means "The Way of the Tang (Chinese) Dynasty hand". However, there is much more than kicking and punching. It has been made popular by one of its well known practitioners: Carlos "Chuck" Norris.

Through practicing Karate/Tang Soo Do, all practitioners can benefit:

Physically - By developing good coordination and a strong body.

Mentally - By building self-confidence, gaining good judgement, and developing a sound mind.

Philosophically - By learning to respect others, help others, and standing by the weak.

Weapons such as staff, traditional short sword, traditional long sword, numchaku, and double short sticks are used in advanced levels of Tang Soo Do.

Karate/Tang Soo Do is nearly identical to Tae Kwon Do. The major difference is in sparring. Tae Kwon Do has more restrictive rules regarding sparring, and has been declared an Olympic sport. Tae Kwon Do only allows kicking and punching to certain areas of the body. Whereas, Karate/Tang Soo Do is more holistic, and doesn't have as many limitations regarding sparring. For example, in a Karate/Tang Soo Do sparring match you are allowed to throw, joint lock, sweep, grapple, and strike with your hands, feet, knees and elbow.
